Granola is ‚Potato of the Year 2014‘
Hamburg, 17.02.2014, The potato variety "Granola" has been named the "Potato of the Year 2014" in Germany. This decision was announced on February 14th by Christian Meyer, Minister of Agriculture of Lower Saxony, during the exhibition ‘Biofach’ in Nuremberg (Germany).
“We are delighted”, said Torsten Spill today, Managing Director of Saka/Solana, which bred the variety and still sells it, “Granola was one of the first varieties with a resistance against nematodes and a good taste at the same time. And it shows how important the breeding of new varieties is”.
After its registration in 1975, the variety has quickly established itself on the market: Besides its resistance against nematodes and its taste Granola had a very high yield, a good storability and high adaptability to all climates. In Germany, it was almost continuously the most grown potato variety from 1982 until 1984.
Nowadays, Granola is particularly popular in parts of Latin America and South Asia, such as Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Panama or Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The award “Potato of the Year” has been awarded since 2006 by a jury with representatives from food and potato industry. Their aim is to draw attention to the wide range of potato varieties.
